ДЕРЖАТЬ СЕБЙ В УЗДЁ coll VP subj: human to refrain from emotional outbursts, control o.s.: X держит себя в узде - X keeps himself in check X restrains himself X keeps a tight rein on himself (his emotions) X keeps a (tight) lid on his emotions.
She (Akhmatova) once confided to me in Tashkent that as a girl she had been quick-tempered, moody, and quite unrestrained, stopping at nothing in her impatience to make the most of life. At the time I found this incredible, even when she explained that she had later learned to control herself. But in her old age, when the basic features of her character broke to the surface again, I could see how hard it was for her to keep herself in check (2a).
